Alcohol Addiction

Approximately 10 percent of Canadians are dependent on alcohol at some point in their lives. In fact, 6700 Canadians die each year as a result of drinking alcohol, either by being involved in accidents, committing suicide or murder, and from health problems related to alcohol abuse. Given these realities, it is likely that you, or someone you are close with, are dealing with an addiction to alcohol.

A pattern of heavy drinking can lead to destructive behaviour, including a failure to fulfill major responsibilities at school, work and home. Those who are consistently under the influence may engage in dangerous behaviour such as driving a vehicle or operating machinery while drunk. The life of an alcoholic may be further complicated by legal and relationship issues.

Alcohol Addiction is marked by the following symptoms:

  • A strong need or craving to drink
  • Lack of control over one’s drinking (drinking in inappropriate situations)
  • Development of tolerance to alcohol, resulting in a need to drink greater amounts of alcohol to become drunk

The long-term physical effects of drinking may include:

  • Liver disease
  • Brain and nerve damage
  • Diseases of the stomach, digestive system and pancreas
  • Increased chances of developing certain cancers
  • High blood pressure and strokes

It can be difficult to take the first step in seeking treatment. However, if alcohol addiction is causing occupational, social, or legal issues, it is important to get help. Many individuals are able to overcome their cravings, repair relationships, and resume living healthy and happy lives. Recovering from alcoholism is not an easy process, but Dalton Associates offers support and guidance for individuals, couples and families facing the effects of this disease.
